Yea man, i used to do that. If someone is an a tight budget and cant afford to buy strings very often, boiling them gets all the crap out. Sound like new after....
Don't boil them in water, it rusts out the core of the strings. It will sound ok for a very short time then get progressively worse. Soak them in Metholated Spirts or Denatured Alcohol - google it, there's instructions on how to build a cleaning tube to soak them in. This won't fix heavily slapped strings - but will give you the best chance at extending the life od your strings.
I've tried Dunlops on multiple occasions. For some reason, they're the only strings that have ever broken on me. I don't get it. Glad that they work out for you, though.

No, It's not worth the time. A new set of strings is only about $15. I like Dunlop med. (.105-.45) nickel plated. Nice tone and snap.
Yes I also boil my strings! It works like bomb! When the dirty strings gets heated up to boiling temps. then the coil of your strings expands, causing all the dirt to get out of there! The closest you'll ever get to new strings! You can add some pure lemon juice to the water, that will help to get it clean! You can also give your strings a thorough wipe after every jam session. That will prevent dirt from building up. By doing that you can achieve maximum usage out of your strings!!
I used to in the 60's!! (put some washing powder in as well). Does clean them up and makes them last longer. Have been using nanowebs lately don't think boiling them will do them any good ;-)
